Rogan- The Rarest Art
Heritage Box was in search of the rarest and traditional art and we found in Kutch. For years, the Khatris have been the only family to perform Rogan art, which has been the preserve of men-folk. A 400-year-old Rogan art form is the unique preserve of a Kutch-based Khatri family. Gafoorbhai Khatri, a national prize winner, created the paintings, which have a strong Persian influence. Gafoorbhai, originally from Sindh, managed to pass on the Rogan art form to his children even though all other Rogan artisans failed to sustain themselves after India's partition.
The craft was on the verge of extinction due to a lack of awareness, and entire communities that practiced it switched to other trades. Abdul Gafoor, a young man, followed suit. He looked for work in Ahmedabad and even Mumbai. When machine-made business textiles prevailed over hand-crafted Rogan artwork withinside the 1980s, folks who practiced the artwork struggled to make ends meet and needed to search for new jobs "There were no tourists in Gujarat at the time, and our art was not selling. Only later did the government assign us a project and begin assisting us. My grandfather and father then requested me to come back."
Abdul Gafur Khatri found out his significance in maintaining the legacy of his ancestors. If he had been to desert the artwork, it'd pass extinct. With this experience of responsibility, he fought thru poverty and promised to preserve the artwork. Today, he has been working on Rogan artwork for nearly 50 years.
