Sanjhi Art

Hi! I am Shyam Soni, a Sanjhi artist & I bring art from Mathura, a holy city in the heart of Brij Bhoomi, considered one of the finest arts of spiritual expression. The floors of temples were covered with motifs representing Indian mythology stories.

The Sanjhi design creates intricate motifs cut into paper. Craftsmen use specially designed scissors to accomplish this process, and placing them on flat surfaces or water to be drawn on. Dry colors are then sifted onto the surface. The process of filling the colors and lifting the stencil is just as important as cutting the design. A complex Sanjhi design could take anywhere between an hour and a month to complete.
