Suf Embroidery

Hi! I am Tara Punvar & I present an art from Kutch, Suf embroidery is a type of counted thread embroidery that is being practiced today in Gujarat's Kutch region and western India. The designs are geometric, symmetrical, and exceedingly detailed, and are based on a triangle or suf.

This sort of weaving was commonly employed to decorate a bride's collection of garments and was given to the bridegroom's family as a gift. Themes are never sketched. Every craftsman visualizes his or her strategy before counting it out backwards! In this craft, gifted artisans must have a strong grasp of geometry as well as excellent visual awareness. A skilled craftsman demonstrates virtuosity in the details, filling symmetrical patterns with tiny triangles and accent stitching.
